Dodge
&
Burn
The Site
Dodge & Burn is a place for me to share my photos with you. I wrote it myself (rather than using Flickr or one of the other excellent photo sharing sites available these days) because I wanted to be able to do whatever I liked with it (it also gave me an excuse to play with some cool technologies).
Photography is an increasingly important part of my life. I'm pretty uncomfortable referring to myself as an artist, but I'll concede that I consider myself a serious amateur. Having this site is a way for me to aspire to bigger things.
Web Browsers
Dodge & Burn is best viewed with the latest version of the Firefox web browser. I've tested it in Safari and Opera and it works all right, though some of the bells and whistles aren't fully functional.
Viewing Dodge & Burn with Microsoft Internet Explorer does not work well. I know that Internet Explorer is by far the most popular browser available but I recommend against using it because:
  • It is not known for standards compliance (making it hard for sites like this one to do cool stuff that works in all web browsers).
  • It is significantly less secure than browsers (like Firefox, Opera, and Safari) whose code has been publicly reviewed.
  • It is popular mostly because of the personal computer software monopoly Microsoft enjoys.
Because I don't have a lot of respect for Internet Explorer I decided not to go out of my way to make this site compatible with its idiosyncrasies. I hope that this isn't too incovenient for you. I'll get off my soapbox now. ;-)
The Technology
If case you are curious (and geeky), it might interest you to know that Dodge & Burn is custom software built with: I shoot both film and digital and process my images with ImageMagick and The GIMP.
